Taiwan and Beyond 2008 Conference
Without further comment I would like to share the Q&As I am exchanging with the 'conference officers':
Dear Martin, dear Paola,
Thank you for your reply!
Of course, before asking my questions, I have read the attached .pdf and went to the conference website (which basically has no more information than the .pdf contains)
To 1. May I suggest to clearly define a Harvard Business Case format, there are several, exceedingly different formats online.
To 2. There is clearly no descriptive format rule other than double spaced available. Does this mean e.g. references can be written in any (APA, MPA or other) style?
To 4. The submission (and later transfer of copyright) for a PhD student only makes sense if it is accepted as a conference paper according to regulations. Otherwise, all work would be in vain, because this paper can never be submitted again for any conference or journal.
This should have been addressed from the very beginning; the discussion now is only a valuable loss of time as is the Q&A game due to inexact and non-detailed information (for you, as conference officers, for me and PhD students in general)
To 5. see 1. & 2.
To 7. There is information about how to handle "Embryo Cases" but NO DEFINITION, neither in .pdf, nor website.
At this point, I would like to mention that DISCRIPTIVE and COMPLETE information should be available at the point of time this conference goes public. Any outsider (of the university) will get his/her impression of, not only the conference, but also of NCKU in general after looking at this.
So far, 2 out of my 7 questions have been answered; I do hope to have the rest answered ASAP, without referrals and links unless they are descriptive.
As with many things we are responsible for the external pictures, we create of our university. I am sure there is much potential there!
Sincerely,
Thomas Geiger

Hallo Thomas and Olga,
Here the answers to your questions:
(1) Are there any limitations to the size (min/max) of the paper?
Yes, there is a maximum of 25 pages, considering the characteristics of a Business Case (Harvard format) we suggest you present a paper of 20-25 pages. Appendix excluded.
(2) “Accepted papers must be typed according to the format defined by the Conference”. And, what is the format?
Please visit www.imba.ncku.edu.tw/conference for instructions and materials.
(3) Are students permitted to submit more than one paper?
Yes.
(4) For PhD students, is the participation in the conference accepted as a step towards the Candidate PhD, according to the regulations and stipulations of NCKU and MOE?
We are discussing this with the Chair, we will get back to you soon on this one.
(5) If the submitted paper was submitted as a term paper at NCKU, does it count as “previously not published”?
Yes, students are allowed to submit a modified term paper when compliant with the Harvard Business Cases logic and the conference format.
(6) Papers are not allowed to be copyrighted. According to international intellectual property rights, the owner (in this case the author) of any intellectual property has the right to “reserve all rights”. Is this the case?
When the author(s) submits a paper for the conference and it gets accepted, the author must sign a transfer of copyright agreement waiving his rights over the materials and transferring them to the Conference for publication, distribution, etc etc. This is a standard agreement.
(7) Please define the term: Embryo case!
Please visit www.imba.ncku.edu.tw/conference for instructions and materials.
We will get back to you about question (4) asap, may you have more questions about the conference please feel free to check with us at any time.
At this point I would like to mention that the conference website gets updated periodically and it is our advice for the participants to visit the conference site regularly.
Best regards,
